Another Tesla in the junkyard: https://www.iaai.com/Vehicle?itemID=26239435&RowNumber=49&loadRecent=True Suspension collapsed and back wheel is just hanging on by a thread. This is the same kind of failure that caused a fatal crash in Hawaii. How many more incidents of suspension failure do you need before you issue a recall? Please investigate. Concerned citizen etc.

Here is another Tesla Model S with a back wheel fallen off. http://www.pictame.com/place/autorecycling-kempers/1034833730 I have no information about the cause of this accident but the car appears to be in near perfect condition apart from the snapped off wheel and suspension. There is a clear pattern of failure in these Tesla suspensions. It seems very strange that such an expensive car can not simply have the broken suspension parts replaced rather than scrapping the car for parts. Tesla is very uncooperative in supplying parts and carrying out repairs. Perhaps they are afraid the car will fail again in the same fashion and that people might get killed. Please investigate. Concerned citizen etc.

Here is a Tesla being wrecked for parts in a UK junkyard. https://www.car-transplants.co.uk/breaking-vehicles/details/tesla-models-electric-automatic/46510 The car has only done 1000 miles and is in near perfect condition apart from the front wheels and suspension having fallen off. A close up photograph is attached which shows that the cast Aluminium steering knuckle has fractured. The damage to the car is not that severe and is unlikely to have caused that part to break. A sharp fracture like that is almost certainly caused by a defect in the casting. The relatively small upper ball-joint is still intact. Even if the Tesla suspension is deliberately designed to snap off in a crash as some Tesla enthusiasts are claiming, it is still essential that the part should not snap during normal driving. The use of cast aluminium rather than having forged aluminium parts or parts machined from billet Aluminium is a poor choice of materials. Cast Aluminium is known to be prone to defects and has much lower tensile strength. Please investigate. Concerned citizen etc.

As I understand it is the job of NHTSA is to detect defect trends and if there appears to be a pattern of failure with a particular car then it should take action to avoid endangering the public. You don’t need to be a rocket scientist to see that Tesla suspensions are falling apart at an excessive rate. Please investigate. Concerned citizen Etc. Etc.

The wheel and tire appear undamaged even though the Tesla wheels are reportedly built fragile so they do not intrude into the passenger compartment during a crash. Here is yet another Tesla in the junkyard with a broken suspension: https://www.iaai.com/Vehicle?itemID=26267542&RowNumber=88&loadRecent=True Multiple components of the suspension have snapped. The steering knuckle has broken in half and the lower arm ball joints have failed. There have been many other examples of this kind of failure and it is apparent that Tesla is quietly fixing some customers cars without even informing other owners of the danger. Example - http://bit.ly/2y5UQcC And also https://seekingalpha.com/news/3299876-truth-catching-tesla-wsj?v=1507546600 Mine has had numerous suspension replacements done during servicing (not requested by me, but printed on the job sheets). I also know several others with similar vintage cars (pre-2015) that have had similar proactive work done. So it may not be wholesale throughout the fleet, but it does appear they have been doing “recall-lite” on something suspension related on at least part of the fleet.* Please take action. Here is a report of a Tesla crash in Austria: http://www.tt.com/panorama/unfall/13565308-91/tesla-brannte-bei-unfall-in-pians-komplett-aus-lenkerin-verletzt.csp?tab=article The 19-year-old driver from Innsbruck was traveling towards Bludenz towards 1 pm. Because of a construction site in the local area, the two-lane expressway from Landeck West to the shortly before the Pianner / Quatratscher tunnel is led in the fast lane and then diverted to the normal track before the tunnel. The 19-year-old changed from a previously unknown cause not as pre-determined the lane, but drove frontally against the oblique running concrete walls. The electric car immediately began to burn. The woman, who was still able to get herself safe, suffered injuries of undefined grade and was sent to Zams Hospital.*** Attached photograph shows the wheel and suspension parts lying on the ground. It is highly likely that a suspension failure was the cause of the crash. Once again the car has burst into flames and the photographs show that it is the Glycol coolant burning rather than the actual Lithium batteries. The flammable coolant is easily spilled in a front end collision and there are many sources of potential ignition in this electric car. Having gallons of flammable liquid piped through fragile radiators at the front of the car is a very dangerous idea. Please take action. Concerned citizen etc. etc.

This is a complaint about the Tesla Autopilot. Here is a credible and easily verified report by a Tesla owner in UK who has had a near death experience while on Autopilot: https://teslamotorsclub.com/tmc/threads/at-what-point-do-i-say-enough-is-enough.100508/ ** A few weeks ago, the car whilst in auto pilot suddenly swerved across the motorway into the middle lane. I caught it half way across. The motorway was perfect. (interestingly at a supercharger, I asked the guy next to me if this had ever happened to him, and he said ‘funnily enough, it had and just that very day for the first time’ (that’s not a coincidence surely) This was the final straw so I sent it off. Sat Nav, Auto Pilot, wont lock, returning to car with door open, doesn’t present doors some of the time, doors don’t close some of the time, screen goes black, etc etc etc. It acts with the consistency of a small child, yet its supposed to be software driven. The autopilot issue is my biggest concern. The guy I spoke to who said his had done the same that day, said his drove towards a lorry. I thought it wasn’t supposed to do that as it has sensors? It was very windy that day so I wonder if that was anything to do with it, either way Tesla were so concerned about it, they didn’t even bother to take the details of this guy when I raised this issue to them.** Even if the owner has his hands lightly on the wheel the power steering has sufficient power to wrench it out of his hands. This Autopilot is half-baked and glitchy and the constant software tweaks are making it even more dangerous. No other car-maker would be allowed to conduct such a reckless experiment. Please take action before more lives are lost. Thank you. Concerned citizen etc.

Suspension has simply snapped off for no good reason. There is a clear trend of defect in the Tesla suspensions. If this car was being produced in the same volumes as mainstream car-makers then you would be seeing thousands of cars with wheels fallen off. It is scandalous that this danger is allowed to continue. Please act now to protect the public. Date of incident is an approximation.

Here is a Tesla in the junkyard: https://www.iaai.com/Vehicle?itemID=26419239&RowNumber=95&loadRecent=True It has been hit from the rear but the attached photographs show a skewed rear wheel and broken suspension linkage which is very likely the reason that the car suddenly slowed/swerved causing it to be hit from the rear. The alloy lower suspension arm has snapped. The wheel and tire are undamaged. It is highly improbable that collision damage was the cause of the broken suspension arm since the tire would have absorbed most of the impact. From the crash testing videos it is evident that the Tesla wheels are very fragile and ought to have broken before the suspension did. This looks once again to be the fault of poor design and manufacturing of the cast alloy suspension parts in the Tesla. Please investigate. What happened?
Here is a complaint posted on the Tesla forum about a total loss of power steering: https://forums.tesla.com/forum/forums/broken-power-steering Snip** My wife called today to tell me her new tesla X had an error light that said service and power steering assist may be limited. I called my local center to inquire as to what to do next. I asked if the car was driveable, as at that time the steering seemed to be working fine. They said go for it, they’d look at the logs and get back to me. Sure enough on my way home from an errand with my 3 kids in the car, the steering stopped working. Thank god it was me driving, as there would be no way my wife would have been able to turn the wheel at all. I drove home carefully. After some research it seems this is an issue several others have gone through. Many have noted a loose ground or other power connection issue. I find it unbelievable that I could find this out in a few moments on google, but when calling tesla service, they told me to go ahead and drive the car. When I called them back, and let them know their advice could have killed me or at least gotten me into an accident, I did not get much in the way of a response.** This same failure is being discussed on many of the Tesla forums. This is unacceptably dangerous. Please take urgent action to protect lives. Thank you. Concerned citizen.

What happened?
Here is a discussion about the dangers of the rear seats in the Model X: https://forums.tesla.com/forum/forums/concern-about-head-injury-third-row-seating snipThe third row seats are clearly exceedingly dangerous for medium-tall passengers. It is just a matter of time (if it has not happened already) that someone is killed or suffers devastating neck injuries from this seating/roof design. The problem is that someone can sit ‘comfortably’ in that seat and think they are safe, but in even a minor frontal crash their forehead would strike the rear hatch-window-frame cross member, violently rotating the head backwards, breaking the person’s neck. Tesla ‘cleverly’ used the glass hatch roof to allow more headroom with a lower aerodynamic roof, but this just means people might sit in this seat who are too tall to survive there in even a minor frontal impact accident. Tesla should have a disclaimer (height restriction?) about this issue. The thread also discusses the danger to children in a booster seat. It appears that the authorities are permitting Tesla to self regulate in these matters of safety. Owners have the belief that Tesla is the safest car in the world and that Tesla can be trusted to do the right thing. I am of the opinion that such faith is not justified. Please investigate to prevent someone being killed or rendered quadriplegic. Thank you. Concerned citizen.

Here is a Tesla in the junkyard: https://www.iaai.com/Vehicle?itemID=26437884&RowNumber=57&loadRecent=True The car has been in a rollover accident and is severely damaged. It has bio-hazard stickers which means that occupants have been injured. The car is badly damaged and I have no knowledge of the circumstances of the crash. However, given the many other cases of suspension failures in the Teslas it is a least a possibility that a suspension failure did cause a loss of control of the vehicle. The back LH wheel is slanted over at an angle. There is no damage to the bodywork on that part of the car. It is difficult to imagine a scenario in which that wheel could have been forced outwards at the bottom in a rollover Please note that I am not claiming there is absolute proof that a suspension failure caused this crash, only that there is a possibility of it. Vehicle crashes are an everyday event and it is likely that the investigators at the scene were unaware that there have been so many cases of Tesla suspension failures and that should look very closely at the circumstances of this crash to see if this may have been a factor. Not only are there many wrecked Teslas showing up in the junkyards with broken suspensions but there have been several crashes caused when Teslas suddenly veered off the road. Please investigate. Here is another Tesla in the junkyard: https://www.copart.com/lot/38498547 It has bio-hazard stickers indicating that occupants were injured. The front top ball joint has separated from its socket. Both lower ball joint stems have snapped. These are steel components that are stronger than the alloy parts they are attached to. Something is very wrong if the ball and socket can pop apart like this even if it did happen after the crash. The wheel has been sliced in half as if it was mounted on a lathe and a cutting tool forced into the rim. It looks highly probable that the wheel was sliced in half whilst it was still rotating and that almost certainly happened before the crash. There is no other make of car in which near new cars are showing up in the junkyards with broken suspensions and sliced wheels at anywhere near the frequency that Tesla cars do. Please investigate the reasons for all these failures. Thank you. Please note that I am filing these reports as a concerned citizen. I am not a Tesla owner and I am making these reports because I believe there is a clear pattern of repeated failures in the Tesla suspensions. Date of crash is an approximation.

Here is a Tesla in the junkyard: https://www.copart.com/lot/39926687/Photos It has been totally destroyed by fire. There was an investigation into Tesla fires back in 2014 and it was claimed that fires were caused by road debris puncturing the battery pack and this problem was solved by fitting a battery shield. Teslas are still catching fire at an alarming rate. I believe that the cause of many of these fires is not that the Lithium battery catches fire first but that the Ethylene Glycol leaks out and catches fire. The attache photograph of a 2013 fire clearly shows the coolant blazing beneath the car. A Google image search for “Tesla fire” shows many of these Glycol fires. The Lithium batteries may well ignite as well but in most cases it seems that the primary cause of fire is the Glycol. Advice to first responders should be modified because using water is not the best way to extinguish a flammable liquid fire. Please investigate. Concerned citizen.
